Evolve 1
The first of the monthly resident podcasts by one of the people behind listenup.za.net – Matt Gray get things started with a progressive house mix and answers a few questions on the as the journey sets in.
About this DJ:
Matt Gray has been involved in electronic music ever since a friend lent him his “Future sounds of the UK 2 ” double cassette (mixed by none others than the freestylers) tape back in 1998…
This sparked an major interest and passion for a variety of electronic genre’s, most noticeably breakbeat (progressive & nu skool), house (deep & progressive), downtempo, ambient & drum n bass…
Matt hosted a Cape Town night radio show for 4 years under the name “doubleone” where he started learning the skills of music selection, mixing and production..further building his passion for electronic music.
Matt is a DJ who is more comfortable mixing in his own studio, with friends, on the radio or releasing mixes and sharing them on the net with like minded people – but more requests from the networks he has grown over the years could soon bring a change, who knows what the future holds.
As one of the people behind listenup.za.net, its been decided that Matt will release a monthly podcast focusing on the genre’s that he is passionate about.
In conjunction with 2 or 3 select DJ’s each month – the listenup.za.net podcasts looks to expose serious up and coming talent in South Africa and has already hit around 2500 downloads and counting with the first 5 mixes which have been released.

Take us through this mix:
1. Pete Moss – Strive To Live (16B Mix)
Great intro track to set the scene, heard this one on Digweeds Fabric 20 and since then its been a regular on my playlists for a while now
2. Pelle Buys – Come Into My World (Chaim mix)
Deep, emotional but with some uplifting sections..clear and dry beat followed by a flanging effect introduces a highly emotional track evolving with many different elements – ideal to build the mix and prepare for whats to come
3. Daniela Stickroth – Chest In The Attic
Another deep progressive track, featured on a recent transitions compilation, another piece of the emotional journey
4. Boris Brejcha – White Snake
Picking things up with this one, more of a techno edge to this track but holding it together with a great melody which spans most of the track
5. Marc Marzenit – Spheere
Brilliant track, uplifting – vocal element, synth and breakdowns make this an ideal peak time track
6. Axel Bartsch – Rock’n Roll
Electro filled tech edgded rhythms topped with epic melodies and driven by a heavy bass, loveley bridging tune, more emotions flowing with this one.
7. The Droyds – All I Ever Wanted (Dusty Kid Needs Love Mix)
Shifting direction slightly, progressive brilliance from dusty kid with this one – love this tune
8. Nick Warren – The Orange Room
What can I say, been waiting to drop this track into a mix for a while now, right up my alley, just combines so many elements of progressive and heavy basslines into an excellent track
9. Sono – Since You´re Gone (Time Writers Days Of Changes Mix)
Heard this track on a Hernan Cattaneo compilation a while back, emotional, more progression and allows things to slowg things down slightly down ever so slightly.
10. January Morning (Retroid Micro Dub Mix)
Retroid is a firm favorite of mine in the progressive breaks arena, but this 4/4 remix of his is excellent, atmospheric, dreamy and I think an appropriate way to end the journey.
